How to use this calculator

Gravel is sold by both volume and weight. This calculator gives both, while keeping density editable because stone type, size, grading, and moisture can materially affect weight.

  1. Measure the rectangular coverage area.
  2. Enter the planned compacted gravel depth.
  3. Replace the density default with a supplier value when available.
  4. Use the volume for coverage planning and treat weight as an estimate.

Formula and methodology

Volume = length × width × depth. Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. Estimated pounds = cubic feet × entered density. Recommended values include the selected extra percentage.

Important: Weight is approximate. Gravel density varies with material, particle size, gradation, void space, compaction, and moisture.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 12 ft area at 3 in deep is 60 cu ft, or about 2.22 cu yd. At an assumed 100 lb/cu ft, that is approximately 6,000 lb before extra material.

  • Compacted depth and loose delivery volume are not always identical.

Why is gravel density editable?

There is no single exact density for all gravel. A local supplier’s value for the specific product is more useful than a universal assumption.

How do I convert pounds to tons?

For U.S. short tons, divide pounds by 2,000. Confirm which ton definition your supplier uses.

Should depth be entered before or after compaction?

Enter the finished depth you want, then use an extra-material allowance and supplier guidance to account for compaction.
